Pakistan's Election Commission Promises Relief: General Elections Set for January or February
Pakistan's Election Commission assures political parties that general elections will be held by end of January or mid-February, providing relief to the cash-strapped nation and ensuring a level playing field for all.
Pakistan's Election Commission has given assurance to the political parties that the general elections will be held by the end of January or mid-February. The announcement comes as a relief to the cash-strapped nation, as there were fears about the fate of the polls. The assurance was provided to the Awami National Party (ANP) during a meeting with the Election Commission. The Chief Election Commissioner chaired the meeting, which was also attended by senior officials. The ANP delegation requested an election date and schedule if conducting the polls within 90 days was not feasible.
The Election Commission assured them of their readiness for mid-February elections and expressed their commitment to expediting the constituency delimitation process to allow for earlier elections. The ANP highlighted the constitutional requirement of holding elections within 90 days after the assembly's dissolution, expressing concerns about the last-minute approval of census results. The ECP explained that once the census results were approved and officially notified, the commission was bound by law to redraw constituencies accordingly. The need for a level playing field for all political parties was also emphasized.
Consultative sessions were held with other parties, where the decision to conduct fresh delimitation received support, as it would ensure justice for all. The Balochistan Awami Party also reminded the ECP to consider the weather before announcing the election schedule. Pakistan has been facing political turmoil following the ouster of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, and the recent suspension of his sentence on corruption charges by a high court has barred him from contesting elections for five years.
