Pakistan President Arif Alvi has called on the caretaker government to address the concerns raised by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party regarding the erosion of fundamental rights and lack of equal opportunity for all parties in the lead-up to the upcoming general elections. President Alvi sent a letter to Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar after receiving a communication from PTI General Secretary Omar Ayub Khan outlining the concerns of the party.

The PTI has alleged that it is facing obstacles in carrying out political activities and that several of its leaders are incarcerated following violence in the country on May 9. The party has called for free, fair, and transparent conduct of the upcoming polls and demanded that a level playing field be provided to all political parties throughout the electoral process. In response, Prime Minister Kakar has stated that politicians with loyalties to PTI Chairman Imran Khan, who is currently in jail on charges related to a cipher case and the Toshakhana case, will be allowed to contest the upcoming elections.

President Alvi, in his letter, highlighted the importance of the caretaker government acting as a neutral entity to ensure a level playing field for all political parties. President Alvi also expressed appreciation for the premier's recent remarks assuring equal rights and opportunities for all registered political parties. He emphasized that democracy is the only viable way forward for Pakistan, with its essence lying in allowing people to participate in political activities and voice their opinions through a free media.

In his letter, President Alvi cited concerns regarding enforced disappearances, forced conversions of political loyalties, absence of a level playing field, crackdown on media, and mistreatment of female political activists through prolonged illegal detentions. He called on PM Kakar, as the head of the government, to address these issues in accordance with the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. The PTI is not the only party raising concerns about a level playing field in the lead-up to the polls.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have also voiced grievances and allegations against each other and the caretaker government. The PPP, which was previously coalition partners with the PML-N, has even announced openness to forming an electoral alliance with the PTI to counter their former ally. As the general elections draw closer, it is crucial for the caretaker government to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process that upholds the fundamental rights of all political parties and allows the people of Pakistan to have their voices heard.
