Pakistan has officially applied for membership in the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) grouping and has sought the support of Russia, according to the country's envoy to Moscow, Muhammad Khalid Jamali. The application was filed for the 2024 BRICS group and Pakistan is counting on Russia's assistance during the membership process. Jamali stated that Pakistan plans to join the group under Russia's presidency next year.

Pakistan is currently facing one of its worst economic and political crises, but it hopes to gain support from its all-weather ally China. The other four members of BRICS, Brazil, India, Russia, and South Africa, will ultimately determine whether Pakistan will be admitted into the organization. The bloc first started as BRIC in 2006, and later became BRICS with the addition of South Africa. BRICS has emerged as an influential organization with its own banking institution, the New Development Bank based in Shanghai.
