Pakistan and Iran Pledge to Ease Tensions through Dialogue and Cooperation

In a bid to ease tensions following deadly cross-border strikes, Pakistan and Iran have pledged to improve dialogue and swap liaison officers. The raids in the porous border region of Baluchistan had inflamed regional tensions, but both nations are now working towards de-escalation. During a visit to Pakistan, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian expressed confidence in overcoming the hostilities, emphasizing the strong historical relations between the two nations. Both foreign ministers have agreed to strengthen dialogue at all levels and to speed up the plan to place liaison officers in each other's countries.

The initial Iranian strikes against an anti-Iran group in Pakistan, and the subsequent retaliatory pre-dawn raid by Pakistan on militant targets in Iran's Sistan-Baluchistan province, led to further tensions. However, both countries have now decided to de-escalate and allow both ambassadors to return to their posts. The recent exchange of air strikes prompted concern from the United States, European Union, and China, all of whom urged restraint.

Despite this, both foreign ministers emphasized the importance of strong long-term relations and respect for each other's borders. To further encourage stability and cooperation, both sides have agreed to speed up the development of border markets along the frontier and establish a new consultative mechanism at the ministerial level, along with regular meetings to be held in each other's capitals. This renewed commitment to dialogue and cooperation marks a positive step towards easing tensions and promoting regional stability.
