One Year After Roe v Wade Overturning: Calls for Reproductive Rights Restoration Amidst Abortion Debate
x

As the US marked one year since the overturning of Roe v Wade on Saturday, abortion rights supporters and politicians called for the restoration of reproductive rights, while anti-abortion groups declared the decision a first step in their effort to limit access to the procedure. President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris issued statements decrying what they termed "extreme and dangerous abortion bans," while Texas Congress member Jasmine Crockett described the period post-Dobbs as “a year of trauma & terror for women across the country." Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs signed an executive order on Friday designed to protect abortion rights in her state. Meanwhile, influential reproductive rights organizations such as Planned Parenthood endorsed Biden and Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

An NBC News poll published Friday found that 61% of voters disagreed with the court’s decision in Dobbs, with 67% of women disapproving. Despite this, anti-abortion leaders are describing the decision as a first step, with Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B Anthony Pro-Life America, saying, “We are at the starting line. We have just begun a journey to start saving lives.”

As the country heads towards the 2024 presidential election, reproductive health is set to be a major issue, with Democrats calling for the restoration of Roe v Wade and Republicans pushing to limit access to abortion. With the American public largely in disagreement with the court’s decision, the future of abortion rights in the US remains uncertain.
