According to Larsen's sister, Peggy Steimel, it was the first time the family had flown their private plane to visit her. Federal Aviation Administration records indicated that Larsen's plane, which was built in 1966, had a valid airworthiness certificate until 2030. Close friend and fellow pilot, Joe Faller, described Larsen as passionate about flying and dedicated to gaining experience towards his commercial pilot's license. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the cause of the crash, with a preliminary report expected in two weeks.
