Former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release after being convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others at a hospital in northern England. The judge highlighted Letby's "cruelty and calculation" and described her actions as "malevolence bordering on sadism."

Letby refused to appear in court for sentencing, causing anger among the victims' families. Calls have been made for changes in the law to ensure that criminals face their victims during sentencing. An independent inquiry will also be conducted to investigate the hospital's response to the spike in neonatal unit deaths.
