NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg: Unwavering Support for Ukraine, No Ceding Territory to Russia

Speaking at a conference in the Norwegian town of Arendal, Stoltenberg reiterated NATO's unwavering support for Ukraine, stating that NATO's role is to assist Ukraine in its efforts. This statement came in response to comments made earlier in the week by Stoltenberg's chief of staff, Stian Jenssen, who suggested that Ukraine may potentially cede territory to Russia as part of a resolution to the ongoing conflict.

Stoltenberg clarified that Jenssen's remarks did not reflect NATO's official position and expressed regret over the comments. He emphasized that NATO's policy remains unchanged, reiterating their support for Ukraine and reaffirming the country's right to independently determine its own path, free from Russian influence.

At its summit last month, NATO announced that it would extend an invitation to Ukraine to join the military alliance once certain conditions are met and members agree. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the summit, although he stated that an outright invitation would have been ideal.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has escalated since February 2022 when Russian forces launched a full-scale invasion. Ukraine has heavily relied on the support of its Western partners, including the training of Ukrainian troops and the supply of weapons.

In conclusion, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has reiterated the alliance's commitment to supporting Ukraine and emphasized that Ukraine alone has the right to decide when the conditions are suitable for negotiations.

While previous comments from a senior NATO official caused some confusion, Stoltenberg clarified that NATO's policy remains unwavering in its support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
