NATO Secretary General Confident: US will Overcome Political Hurdles to Support Ukraine with Weapons & Aid

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed confidence on Tuesday that the United States would continue to provide support and deliver weapons to Ukraine, despite political obstacles in Washington. The US has already contributed over $40 billion in security aid to Ukraine since the Russian invasion and has committed to supporting Kyiv for the foreseeable future. However, resistance from staunch Republicans has raised doubts about the continuity of US assistance.

Speaking at a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, Stoltenberg assured that the United States would persist in its support due to its own security interests and in line with previous agreements. Concerns about the future of Western support for Ukraine have intensified, particularly as top Ukrainian general acknowledged that the intense fighting has reached a stalemate. The European Union is currently grappling with formulating a plan for its sustained backing of Ukraine, facing opposition from Hungary.

Stoltenberg urged NATO allies to continue their support for Ukraine, highlighting recent pledges of 10 billion euros ($11 billion) from Germany and the Netherlands. Despite minimal frontline movement, Stoltenberg emphasized that Ukraine has managed to inflict significant losses on Russian forces. To hinder Russia's logistical capabilities, Latvian Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karins stressed the need for Ukraine to receive more long-range missiles.

He asserted that continued support is crucial to prevent Russia from winning the war. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, is expected to join the meeting on Wednesday where NATO members plan to agree on a reform agenda aimed at assisting Ukraine in its journey towards eventual NATO membership. Ukraine has been pushing to join NATO, but the alliance has not yet issued a formal invitation, despite promising that Kyiv will be included one day.
