Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has made significant strides in the fight against corruption, recovering Pakistan rupees (PKR) 2.3 trillion and saving over USD 10 billion for the national exchequer, according to NAB chairman Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmed. Speaking at an event, Ahmed highlighted that NAB is committed to ensuring that every act of corruption is met with consequences, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to curb corruption. He also stressed the importance of documenting the economy, stating that it will benefit the country and significantly reduce corruption.

The event was attended by prominent economist Dr. Ashfaque Hasan Khan and Jeremy Milsom, the country representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Pakistan. Dr. Khan, in his keynote speech, emphasized the importance of incentivizing the tax system rather than relying solely on punitive measures. He noted that individuals in the informal/unregistered economy often face poverty due to a lack of access to banking incentives. Pakistan's economy has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including record inflation, soaring commodity prices, and significant declines in foreign investment and remittances.

The country's weak institutions have been identified as a major contributor to corruption, with insufficient political will to eradicate corruption from society and a bureaucracy that holds significant authority over various institutes. Additionally, low salaries in the public sector, high inflation rates, and the control and allocation of public resources by government bodies have contributed to the spread of corruption at all levels of government. According to the 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index, Pakistan scored 27 out of 100, ranking 139th out of 174 countries. This highlights the urgent need to address corruption and strengthen anti-corruption measures in the country. The efforts of NAB and other stakeholders in recovering substantial amounts of money and advocating for systemic changes are crucial steps in the fight against corruption in Pakistan.
