Modi and Xi Discuss Border Issues and Trade Reforms at BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg. During their conversation, PM Modi expressed his concerns about the unresolved issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Western Sector of the India-China border areas. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas and respecting the LAC for the normalization of the India-China relationship. Both leaders agreed to direct their officials to intensify efforts for expeditious disengagement and de-escalation.

While there was no official confirmation on President Xi's participation in the upcoming G20 Summit in Delhi, both leaders were seen shaking hands and exchanging courtesies after the BRICS joint conference. In addition to discussing the LAC issues, PM Modi also had bilateral meetings with leaders/representatives from South Africa, Iran, Ethiopia, UAE, Mozambique, and Senegal. The leaders spoke about various topics, including seeking reforms in the UN, enhancing trade in local currencies, the upcoming G20 Summit, and countering terrorism.

The Johannesburg 2 Declaration, which consisted of 94 points, highlighted the leaders' commitment to comprehensive UN reforms to increase representation of developing countries. It also condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, emphasizing the need to combat terrorism financing networks and safe havens. Furthermore, the leaders expressed their support for the successful hosting of the 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi, as well as the opportunities for change during India, Brazil, and South Africa's G20 presidencies from 2023 to 2025. They also discussed the importance of fast, inexpensive, transparent, safe, and inclusive payment systems, with an emphasis on encouraging the use of local currencies in international trade and financial transactions within the BRICS and with their trading partners.

Overall, PM Modi's meeting with President Xi Jinping focused on addressing the unresolved border issues and maintaining peace and tranquility in the India-China relationship. The BRICS Summit also provided a platform for discussions on various global issues, including UN reforms, counterterrorism measures, and enhancing trade using local currencies.
