In a shocking turn of events, the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia became the target of a missile attack that claimed the lives of two people and left seven others injured. Ukrainian officials suspect Russia to be behind the attack, which occurred near Europe's largest nuclear power plant.

Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos and devastation as emergency workers rushed to the site. A Reuters reporter at the scene witnessed the grim sight of a body being lifted and placed in a black body bag.

Rescuers tirelessly searched through the debris, while damaged buildings and shattered windows served as a stark reminder of the destructive power of the missile strike. The city council secretary, Anatoliy Kurtev, stated that the attack targeted a residential area.

A video shared by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy showed billowing smoke engulfing burning and heavily damaged buildings near a church. Concerningly, the church's close proximity to residential buildings raised fears for the safety of the local population. Authorities suspect that an Iskander missile was used in the attack.

The missile strike occurred shortly after Ukrainian authorities issued air raid warnings throughout the country, following reports of a MiG-31K jet taking off from a Russian air base. These jets have the capability to carry hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, known as Daggers, which are among Russia's most advanced conventional weapons.

The incident in Zaporizhzhia is just one of many recent escalations in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Earlier reports indicated that Russia accused Ukraine of attempting a drone attack on the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear complex. However, senior advisor to President Zelenskiy, Mykhailo Podolyak, vehemently denied these accusations.

Tragically, this attack is not an isolated incident. In the nearby city of Nikopol, a resident lost their life due to Russian shelling, while in Kherson, a 16-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries sustained during previous shelling attacks. As Ukraine mourns the loss of innocent lives and attempts to recover from this devastating missile strike, President Zelenskiy stated that Russia will face consequences for its actions. The international community anxiously watches as tensions between Ukraine and Russia reach alarming heights, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
