A massive sinkhole caused by a landslide on a major highway in western Sweden has resulted in accidents, injuries, and damage to buildings. The cause is still under investigation.
A landslide in western Sweden has caused a massive sinkhole on a major highway to Norway, resulting in multiple accidents and injuries. The sinkhole, which measures 500 meters wide, appeared on the E6 highway near Goteborg, not far from Sweden's second-largest city. Swedish police report that four cars and a bus skidded off the road and crashed, leading to three people being hospitalized. Several buildings and facilities, including a Burger King restaurant, were also damaged in the incident.
The exact cause of the landslide is still unknown, but it is believed that construction activities and heavy rain in the area may have contributed to the event. Swedish emergency services received an alarm at 1:45 a.m. that a significant section of the E6 had collapsed in Stenungsund. As a result, emergency officials, along with specially trained dogs and staff, are conducting searches to ensure no individuals are trapped in the debris. According to Swedish media reports, the affected area has been undergoing substantial construction activities involving blasting and excavation work.
Additionally, the region has experienced a significant amount of rainfall in recent days. Footage captured by a drone showed a crack on the E6 that appeared after the initiation of construction on a business park. Swedish police have initiated a preliminary investigation into the incident, aiming to determine the exact cause of the landslide and sinkhole. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
