Lithuania Responds to Security Concerns: Border Crossings with Belarus Temporarily Closed
Lithuania is temporarily closing two border crossings with Belarus, following neighboring countries' increased security measures due to the presence of Russian mercenaries. The closure aims to address security threats and combat smuggling activities, while supporting Ukraine and refugees from Belarus and Russia.
Lithuania has announced plans to temporarily close two of its border crossings with Belarus amid escalating tensions and security concerns. The decision comes as neighboring countries, including Poland and Latvia, have also increased border security measures in response to the presence of Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group in Belarus.
The two rural crossing points, Tverecius and Sumskas, will be closed from August 18th, with traffic being diverted to the Medininkai border checkpoint, which is the largest of Lithuania's checkpoints. This move aims to address changes in the geopolitical situation and national security threats, as well as combating smuggling activities.
Lithuania, a NATO and EU member, has been a strong supporter of Ukraine and has provided refuge for individuals fleeing repression in both Belarus and Russia. The closure of the border crossings is seen as a temporary measure to ensure the effective deployment of border control officers at other checkpoints.
