French writer Gilles Perrault, known for his thought-provoking novels and contributions to societal discourse, has passed away at the age of 92. His family confirmed that he died on August 3 from cardiac arrest. Born as Jacques Peyroles, Perrault initially pursued a career in law before venturing into journalism and fiction under the pen name Gilles Perrault.

In 1978, he published "Le Pull-Over Rouge" (The Red Sweater), a novel that raised doubt about the conviction of Christian Ranucci, who had been executed for the abduction and murder of an eight-year-old girl in 1974. This book triggered intense debates about the death penalty in France, leading to its eventual abolition in 1981.

"Le Pull-Over Rouge" sold over a million copies and became a catalyst for change. Perrault was dedicated to reopening Ranucci's case, but his efforts proved unsuccessful. In an interview with AFP in 2006, he expressed his unwavering determination, saying, "It's not a sprint, it's a marathon."

Despite facing defamation charges over the case, Perrault persevered in his pursuit of justice. In addition to "Le Pull-Over Rouge," Perrault's 1990 work "Notre Ami Le Roi" (Our Friend the King) shed critical light on Morocco's Hassan II and his 30-year reign.
