The French seaside resort of Le Touquet has received official approval to rename its airport in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. The airport will be known as 'Elizabeth II International Airport of Le Touquet Paris-Plage'. This name change is a tribute to the late Queen and her uncle, who had a fondness for France.

It is also a recognition of Le Touquet's reputation as the "most British of French resorts". The airport, which has been a popular destination for well-heeled Britons since it opened in the 1930s, is located about an hour's drive south of Calais. The town hall of Le Touquet has requested this name change just days after Queen Elizabeth's death on September 8, 2022.

The airport has historical significance as the queen's uncle, Edward VIII, used to travel there to enjoy horseback riding and sand yachting. In the 1950s, the airport was the third busiest in France, after Orly outside Paris and Nice on the French Riviera. Le Touquet will also host the England rugby team's training camp for the World Cup later this year, from September 8 to October 28, 2023.
