Latvia's defence minister has ordered the army to assist in guarding the country's border with Belarus following multiple attempts by illegal immigrants to enter the country. In just 24 hours, there were 96 reported incidents of individuals trying to cross the border. Border Guard officers have been called back from their holidays to support patrol efforts.

The Latvian Border Guard stated that there is information suggesting a potential increase in hybrid threats, with Belarusian authorities suspected of organizing the flow of illegal immigrants. This situation has raised concerns among EU members Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, who share a border with Belarus.

Poland has also seen a rise in the number of migrants attempting to cross its border in recent months. As a response, Poland plans to deploy an additional 10,000 troops to support its Border Guard. These developments come amidst tensions between Belarus and Poland, as well as the presence of Russian mercenaries in Belarus.

Latvia, Poland, and Lithuania previously faced an immigration crisis in 2021, when thousands of individuals from the Middle East and Africa attempted to cross into Poland from Belarus but were repelled. Additionally, Ukraine has announced plans to fortify its border with Russia and Belarus by investing millions in new military infrastructure and fortifications in its northeast regions.
