Largest Nuclear Reactor in Europe, Olkiluoto 3, Resumes Production After Technical Glitch
The Olkiluoto 3 reactor in Finland, Europe's largest nuclear reactor, is back in operation after a weekend shutdown due to a technical issue. The incident did not impact nuclear safety.
The Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactor in Finland, which is the largest in Europe, has resumed production following a shutdown over the weekend due to a technical issue, according to operator TVO. The reactor came back online after midnight and was running at 1,400 MW by 1:30 pm and is expected to reach full output of 1,600 MW by the end of the day. TVO stated that the reactor was in normal production when a fault in the turbine plant automatically halted electricity production. T
he cause of the fault was identified as a malfunctioning temperature measurement in the generator's cooling system. TVO emphasized that the incident did not impact nuclear safety. The Olkiluoto 3 reactor is a next-generation European pressurized water reactor (EPR) built by the French-led Areva-Siemens consortium and contributes over 10 percent of Finland's electricity generation.
After facing delays for 14 years, the reactor was finally put into regular service in April 2023. The project, like other EPR ventures, has encountered numerous construction setbacks and significant cost overruns. Despite these challenges, Olkiluoto 3 remains the largest nuclear reactor in Europe, surpassing the Zaporizhzhia plant in Ukraine, which has six reactors and is the largest nuclear plant on the continent.
