Karachi Police Crosses the Line: Detains PTI Members in Solidarity Protest for Imran Khan
x

In a show of solidarity with imprisoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, the Karachi police detained multiple members of the PTI who participated in a bike rally organized on Sunday. The rally, organized by the PTI's Karachi chapter, aimed to raise awareness about Khan's unjust treatment in Attock jail. The PTI party called on Karachites to stand together and advocate for Khan's rights, sparking a rally that began from Nursery and concluded at Quaid's Mausoleum.

Following Khan's arrest on August 5, where he was found guilty of corrupt practices in the Toshakhana case and sentenced to three years in prison, concerns have been raised about the living conditions in Attock jail. The PTI's Karachi president, Khurram Sher Zaman, stated that the Sindh police had detained around 140 workers since the rally's announcement. Zaman further accused the police of baton-charging the rally participants, calling their actions a violation of democratic norms.

Although Soldier Bazaar Station House Officer (SHO) Pir Shabbir Haider denied baton-charging the rally participants, footage and photos from the event clearly showed the use of force by the police. Despite facing detainment and police action, PTI party members remained undeterred and continued their rally to the Quaid's Mausoleum near Numaish Chowrangi. The incident raises questions about the right to assemble and participate in peaceful rallies, as well as the treatment of political prisoners in Pakistan. It is important to address these concerns and uphold democratic norms to ensure fairness and justice for all.
