In light of the upcoming New Year celebrations, the Karachi police chief has issued a stark warning to citizens, stating that those engaging in aerial firing will be charged with attempted murder, as reported by The News International. This follows a previous incident on Independence Day, where at least two people lost their lives and over 80 were wounded due to aerial firing in various areas of Karachi. Additional Inspector General Karachi Khadim Hussain Rind has also ordered his subordinates, particularly traffic police chief DIG Iqbal Dara, to arrest individuals for drinking and driving.

A ban on the carrying and display of weapons has been implemented throughout the entire city, with directives issued to arrest those conducting aerial firing. In a high-level meeting presided over by Sindh Inspector General Riffat Mukhtar Raja at the Central Police Office in Karachi, a strategy was discussed, focusing on the need for strong and effective security measures to ensure the protection of people's lives and properties. The imminent threat posed by aerial firing as the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve was emphasized, with directives given for immediate implementation of security measures including rigorous checks on internal and external roads, mobile patrols, and strict monitoring at entry and exit points in all districts.

The importance of taking strong and successful actions against hooliganism and aerial firing was highlighted, with AIG Rind stressing the need for search operations, market and mosque announcements, and positive police actions through social media to counter any negative impact. DIG Dara has been ordered to ensure a smooth flow of traffic on New Year's Eve, conducting random alcohol level checks on vehicles and lodging FIRs for drunk driving.

Additionally, South Zone police chief DIG Syed Asad Raza has requested a ban on the display of weapons on New Year's Eve to prevent traffic jams and inconvenience to area residents. A relevant notification issued by the city commissioner states that a ban under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) is to be imposed on the carrying and display of arms, aerial firing, and the use of firecrackers to safeguard precious lives. The aim of these strict measures is to ensure a safe and secure New Year’s Eve for all citizens.
