Israels Goodwill Gesture Ignites Hope for Historic Peace Deal with Saudi Arabia

In a significant display of goodwill and potential progress towards normalization, Israel extended congratulations and blessings to Saudi Arabia on its 93rd National Day. The Israeli Foreign Ministry took to its Arabic-language social media account to express well-wishes for an atmosphere of peace, cooperation, and good neighborliness. This gesture comes amidst growing talk of a historic peace agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia, as mentioned by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his address at the United Nations General Assembly.

Netanyahu highlighted that such a peace deal could bring an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict, encourage other Arab states to normalize relations with Israel, and foster broader reconciliation between Judaism and Islam. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman recently stated that his country is moving closer to normalizing ties with Israel, although he emphasized that the Palestinian issue remains crucial. Both Netanyahu and bin Salman have expressed optimism about the potential agreement, with Netanyahu citing the alignment between the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Israel as a key factor in its success.

However, some contentious issues still need to be addressed, such as Riyadh's request for a major mutual defense pact, arms deals, cooperation in the development of a civilian nuclear program, and Israeli concessions to the Palestinians. Additionally, there are concerns about Saudi Arabia's potential enrichment of uranium, as it is seeking permission to do so. Netanyahu stressed the importance of safeguarding Israel's security in any potential agreement, but also expressed confidence in the support of his coalition partners.

Despite opposition from a small faction within his Likud party and some experts, Netanyahu believes that when the full package is presented, there is a good chance everyone will support it. However, he does not anticipate that his coalition will need to be dissolved to reach an agreement. Djibouti's Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, recently addressed the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the need for reform in the international financial structure to support the growth of developing nations and help them achieve their development goals. Youssouf criticized "minilateralism," the tendency of countries to form exclusive clubs, as eroding inclusive multilateralism.

Djibouti is among the African nations in financial distress, as identified by the World Bank, and has suspended payments on its debt to China. Despite the challenging economic situation, Djibouti remains committed to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and has made progress in areas like reducing malnutrition and effectively managing the pandemic. The country's long-term strategic vision focuses on strengthening peace, diversifying the economy, developing human capital, and promoting regional integration and international cooperation.

Djibouti recently commissioned its first grid-ready renewable energy power station and emphasized the importance of achieving the goals outlined in the Paris Climate Agreement. Furthermore, Youssouf called for peaceful resolutions to conflicts in Sudan and Djibouti's dispute with Eritrea over the Doumeira Islands.
