Israeli President to Confront Musk Over Antisemitic Debacle in High-Stakes Meeting

Israeli President Isaac Herzog is set to have a closed-door meeting with Elon Musk on Monday to address the controversy surrounding Musk's endorsement of an antisemitic conspiracy theory on his social media platform, X, according to CNN. The meeting, scheduled during Musk's visit to Israel, will focus on combatting the rise of online antisemitism. The president's office has stated that representatives of families affected by a recent Hamas terror attack on October 7 will also be present at the meeting.

Additionally, representatives of families of hostages held by Hamas will join to share their experiences, shedding light on the horrors of the attack and the ongoing pain and uncertainty faced by those still held captive. Musk has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the meeting. The controversy arose when Musk agreed with a claim on X that accused Jewish communities of promoting hatred against Whites. The endorsement led to a rebuke from the White House and a significant loss of advertisers from X.

The specific X post in question alleged that Jewish communities were pushing a form of dialectical hatred towards Whites, despite advocating against such hatred themselves. The post also perpetuated the antisemitic conspiracy theory that minorities were flooding Western countries. CNN reported that Musk responded to the post, stating, "You have said the actual truth," which further fueled criticism. While Musk subsequently denied that his comments were racist or antisemitic, human rights groups and politicians have condemned his remarks.

The controversy has had severe commercial implications for X, with major brands like Disney, IBM, and Fox Sports suspending ad spending on the platform. X, formerly known as Twitter, has been under scrutiny for its handling of antisemitic content in the past, and Musk has previously disputed or denied reports on hate speech. Musk's visit to Israel coincides with a temporary pause in hostilities with Hamas. In an interview, President Herzog expressed mixed emotions over the release of hostages during the truce, hinting at the possibility of extending it if Hamas releases more captives, as reported by CNN.
