The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has escalated this year, resulting in a high number of casualties on both sides, according to the United Nations Middle East envoy. Tor Wennesland highlighted the growing despair about the future, as Palestinians continue to seek an independent state.

The lack of progress in addressing the core issues and the expansion of Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law, have fueled the violence. In addition, the fragile financial situation of the Palestinian Authority and funding shortages faced by UN agencies have compounded the situation.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield urged immediate steps to reduce the escalating violence, while Russia and France called for renewed political dialogue and a resumption of peace talks. Meanwhile, tensions flared in Cyprus as Turkish Cypriot forces allegedly assaulted UN peacekeepers attempting to block unauthorized road construction in the buffer zone.

The incident, the most serious in years, drew international condemnation and led to injuries among the peacekeepers and damage to UN vehicles. Efforts to reunify Cyprus have been at a standstill since 2017.
