Indian woman tragically dies after falling from a cruise ship in the Singapore Strait. Investigations and search operations underway to determine cause of death and locate her body.
Indian Woman Dies After Falling from Cruise Ship in Singapore Strait A tragic incident occurred on Monday when a 64-year-old Indian woman, Reeta Sahani, fell from a cruise ship into the Singapore Strait. Her son, Vivek Sahani, confirmed her death after viewing the closed-circuit television footage from the Spectrum of the Seas, the luxury cruise vessel Reeta and her husband, Jakesh Sahani, were on.
The couple was on their way back to Singapore from Penang, Malaysia, on the last day of their four-day cruise. Early Monday morning, Jakesh woke up to find his wife missing from their room. He immediately informed the ship's crew, who then notified him that the ship's overboard detection systems had been triggered, indicating that something had fallen into the Singapore Strait. Despite efforts to locate Reeta on the sprawling cruise ship, Jakesh was unsuccessful.
The Strait of Singapore, a 113 km long and 19 km wide route between the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea, became the focus of search and rescue operations. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and other authorities swung into action, with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Singapore being notified about the incident. In the midst of the investigation, the Sahani family received support from both the Indian High Commission in Singapore and Royal Caribbean, the company operating the cruise ship. The High Commission has been in contact with the family since being informed of the incident and is working closely with Singaporean authorities regarding the case.
Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean has offered all possible help and assistance, cooperating with local authorities to provide relief to the bereaved family. Reeta's son, Apoorv Sahani, expressed frustration with the cruise staff, claiming that they alleged his mother had jumped off the ship, but failed to provide video footage to confirm their assertion. Apoorv also reached out to India's foreign ministry and the prime minister's office for assistance. However, on Tuesday, Vivek Sahani shared on social media that his mother had indeed passed away, although the cause of death was not specified.
The search for Reeta's body is currently underway. This tragic incident has left the Sahani family grieving their loss, compounded by the fact that it occurred on Reeta's birthday. They have requested privacy as they mourn their loved one. As investigations continue, both Indian and Singaporean authorities are working together to address related issues and facilitate legal procedures. The Singapore navy and coast guard are also assisting in the search operation along the Singapore Strait.
