Indian PM's speech in the US: Why Language Proficiency Doesn't Hinder Communication
The negative articulation and showing down of the Indian Prime Minister Modi's speech in his homeland is just poor strategy by his opposers
Narendra Modi's address to the joint session of the US Congress touched upon a variety of themes, including the Ukraine war, terrorism, women's empowerment, and environmental concerns. His speech was met with applause and standing ovation several times by the US Congress members, including Vice President Kamala Harris.
But what was seen through many social media handles was just negative slants on his command on the English language.
In my humble opinion it is faux paux to take this approach to criticise the leader of the world's largest democracy. Even though the reality is that 350 million Indians speak English. But thhe Indian Prime Minister comes from a humble background where time and again he has stressed on the fact that he as a child was a tea seller at a train station in Gujarat.
I want to take a different approach to help explain why it does not matter in the ability of his mastery of the English language.
There were many though who came to his support.
Years ago a young white super progressive left-wing American young woman mocked Narendra Modi's accent as she was having a chai pe charcha with me in Mumbai. She told me casually "he does not speak properly in English. How can he be a mass leader?". For American progressives…

Language acts as a bridge that connects individuals, cultures, and societies. It allows us to express ourselves, share ideas, and foster understanding. However, when attempting to communicate with individuals who speak a different language, many people believe that language proficiency is a significant hurdle. Contrary to this common belief, this article aims to highlight why language proficiency should not deter us from engaging in meaningful communication with people from different linguistic backgrounds. By embracing alternative forms of communication and focusing on the core aspects of human connection, language barriers can be overcome.
Non-Verbal Communication
Communication is not solely reliant on spoken or written words. Non-verbal communication, such as body language, facial expressions, and gestures, plays a crucial role in conveying messages and emotions. Regardless of language proficiency, these non-verbal cues are universally understood and can help bridge gaps in understanding. A warm smile, a nod, or a friendly gesture can transcend linguistic barriers, fostering a sense of connection and empathy.
Cultural Exchange
Language and culture are intertwined, and when engaging with individuals from different linguistic backgrounds, the opportunity for cultural exchange arises. By focusing on shared experiences, customs, and traditions, we can connect on a deeper level that transcends language proficiency. Embracing cultural differences enriches our understanding of the world and promotes tolerance, respect, and acceptance.
Empathy and Active Listening
Effective communication is not just about speaking but also about active listening and showing empathy towards others. By genuinely listening to someone, even if there is a language barrier, we can understand their emotions, concerns, and needs. Through empathy, we can connect on a human level, regardless of linguistic limitations. This promotes a sense of inclusivity and fosters relationships based on understanding and support.
Technology and Translation Tools
In today's interconnected world, technological advancements have significantly reduced language barriers. Translation tools and apps facilitate real-time translation, enabling individuals to communicate effortlessly, even without fluency in each other's languages. While these tools may not be perfect, they serve as effective aids that can help bridge the gap and facilitate understanding.
Patience and Willingness to Learn
When interacting with individuals from different linguistic backgrounds, displaying patience and a willingness to learn goes a long way. Even if language proficiency is lacking, making an effort to learn a few basic phrases or greetings in the other person's language shows respect and demonstrates a genuine interest in connecting with them. This gesture can break down barriers and create an atmosphere of goodwill.
Language proficiency should not be seen as a roadblock to effective communication with people from different linguistic backgrounds. By embracing non-verbal communication, fostering cultural exchange, practicing active listening, utilizing technology, and displaying patience and willingness to learn, individuals can bridge the gap and connect on a deeper level. Ultimately, human connection goes beyond words, and by recognizing our shared humanity, we can build bridges that transcend language barriers and foster understanding and harmony in an increasingly diverse world.

In conclusion, the India-US relationship is a defining partnership of this century. The US relationship with China for the last 30 years has helped shape China. Today they stand as competitors and the US is certainly worried on whether it will be taken over by China who it does not trust for maintaining a peaceful world order and a free market. India is the freshest friend that can have a tangible difference to the US plan to counter balance the advance of China. India on it's part is looking at the relationship that will help further global sway in dealing with issues of equality in the post-colonial era. India has already made headway but it needs to continue to bring prosperity to its population. There are many in India who still live below the poverty line. If handled carefully the India-US relationship could be a solid partnership where both understand the value of a free progressive world.
