India-Maldives Relations Strained as President Favors China: Visit Hangs in Balance

India and the Maldives have been in discussions about the possibility of a visit by President Mohamed Muizzu, amid tensions as the newly elected leader has shown an inclination towards China. India has expressed that it is not in a rush to host Muizzu after he chose to visit Beijing first. The potential visit was initially proposed in November last year when Muizzu assumed office, but no concrete plans were made. The Maldivian president's call for the withdrawal of Indian troops from the island nation has further strained the relationship.

Additionally, India expressed strong concerns over derogatory remarks made by three Maldivian deputy ministers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Despite the strained ties, Muizzu is currently on a five-day visit to China, during which he has called China the Maldives' closest ally and seeks to intensify Chinese tourism to his country. For India, it is crucial that the visit take place in the right atmosphere, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently meeting with Muizzu in Dubai to discuss issues, with ongoing efforts to find a "workable" solution concerning Indian military personnel.
