Imran Khans Legal Woes Worsen: Former Premier Granted Remand in Toshakhana Graft Case

Former Pakistani premier Imran Khan has been granted a two-day physical remand in the Toshakhana graft case by an accountability court in Islamabad. The case revolves around allegations that Khan violated the Toshakhana rules, which govern the acceptance and declaration of gifts given by foreign leaders to Pakistani top officials. The Toshakhana, or state repository, is where these gifts are stored. Judge Muhammad Bashir of the accountability court approved the remand, following a request from the Deputy Prosecutor General of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the investigative team.

They argued that a thorough investigation into the Toshakhana corruption case required Khan's physical remand. The defense counsel raised objections, but the judge ruled in favor of the anti-graft body. This development occurred one day after the court rejected Khan's pre-arrest plea in the case. Khan has been incarcerated at the high-security Adiala prison in Rawalpindi since September 26, following his ouster from power in April 2022 through a vote of no-confidence.

He was implicated in the cipher case, accused of leaking state secrets and violating the country's laws. Since his removal from office, Khan has faced over 150 cases against him. The Toshakhana graft case adds to the legal challenges he currently confronts. The investigation seeks to uncover any wrongdoing related to the acceptance and handling of gifts from foreign leaders, further complicating Khan's legal troubles. The court has adjourned the hearing until December 16.
