Houthi rebels in Yemen faced heavy losses after a confrontation with US forces in the Red Sea. The rebels initially attacked a Singapore-flagged container ship, prompting a distress call that led to US helicopters and warships responding to the scene. The Houthis fired at the American forces, leading to a confrontation that resulted in the sinking of three of their boats and the deaths of at least 10 fighters. This clash marked a significant escalation in the conflict, as it was the first time US personnel had killed Houthi fighters in the Red Sea.

The US Central Command stated that this incident was the 23rd illegal attack by the Houthis on international shipping since November 19. The ongoing attacks have caused concern for the safety of commercial vessels in the region, prompting global shipping giant Maersk to suspend its operations in the Red Sea for 48 hours. The conflict has also prompted some shipping companies to reroute their vessels, increasing shipping rates and causing delays. The US has established a naval task force, Operation Prosperity Guardian, to ensure safe passage for commercial ships in the Red Sea, but the attacks continue, causing uncertainty for the region.
