A tragic helicopter crash in southern Siberia's Altai Republic has resulted in the death of six individuals and injuries to seven others. The Mi-8 helicopter, belonging to a private company and carrying a group of tourists, caught fire as it was landing and came into contact with a power line.

Conflicting reports suggest that there were either 12 passengers and three crew members or a total of 13 people on board. Videos circulating on social media depict the horrifying scene with the aircraft engulfed in flames and thick smoke.

Emergency services have stated that three of the injured are in critical condition, emphasizing the severity of the incident. The Altai Avia company owned the helicopter, which was operating within Georgia at the time of the crash.

This unfortunate event adds to the growing number of helicopter crashes in Russia and neighbouring countries involving the Mi-8, a two-engine helicopter designed in the 1960s. The frequent occurrence of such accidents raises concerns regarding the safety and maintenance standards of these aircraft.

In May, the Bryansk region experienced the crash of two MI-8 military helicopters and an SU-34 jet, while in October, a military plane crash in the town of Yeysk claimed the lives of 13 individuals. Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway, with initial reports indicating that the helicopter hit electrical wires, precipitating the accident.

The Altai branch of Russia's Emergency Ministry released a photograph showcasing the wreckage of the chopper, further highlighting the devastating impact of the incident. As we mourn the loss of lives in this tragic event, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of accurately assessing the number of individuals on board to provide a comprehensive understanding of the extent of the tragedy.

Our thoughts go out to the families and friends of those affected, as well as to the communities grappling with the aftermath of this devastating helicopter crash.
