Local police commander Geoffrey Mayek said that 48 people had been confirmed dead, with another 30 seriously injured and taken to various hospitals. He warned that the death toll could still rise. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences for those affected by the accident, as did other Kenyan leaders. Road safety is a major issue throughout the country, with the number of deaths on the roads increasing in recent years due to a lack of safety measures.
