Honduran President Xiomara Castro will visit the city of McAllen in Texas on Saturday to meet with US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. The purpose of their meeting is to analyze bilateral cooperation for the "safe, orderly, and humane reduction of irregular migratory flows." The situation at the southern border of Texas, particularly in the Eagle Pass sector, is currently in a state of emergency due to a significant influx of migrants.

This has prompted the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to suspend the processing of vehicles and train cargo at one of the entrances to the Eagle Pass international crossing. The CBP has also reinforced the El Paso area with additional agents, and the Department of Homeland Security has deployed 800 soldiers to help manage the migratory peak. The number of migrants crossing the border has been steadily rising, straining the capacities of US border cities.

President Biden's administration has been working to reduce migration by focusing on economic development in Central America. This meeting between Mayorkas and Castro aims to strengthen cooperation on curbing illegal immigration and reducing the flow of narcotics in the region. Mayorkas will also highlight lawful pathways as an alternative to smugglers during the meeting.
