The 2023 Haj pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, drew 1.8 million worshippers from around the world, according to the Saudi Statistics Authority. This was less than the expected 2.5 million pilgrims, which would have made it the largest haj to date. The majority of the faithful were from outside the kingdom, with 875,000 women and 970,000 men in attendance.

The figures for 2023 represent a significant increase on the 926,000 who took part in 2022, when numbers were capped at one million due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The haj is an important Islamic pilgrimage that Muslims must undertake once in their lifetimes, and its attendance has been boosted by the Saudi authorities' decision in 2021 to scrap the requirement for women to be accompanied by a male guardian.
