Greek Prime Minister Puts Economic Speech on Hold to Tackle Devastating Storm Daniel: Deadly Floods, Destruction, and Scores Missing

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has postponed an annual economic speech in order to visit areas affected by the devastating storm Daniel. The torrential rain has caused flooding, destroyed homes and vital infrastructure, and led to the deaths of at least three people, with four still missing. Mitsotakis, who recently won a second term, was set to outline his economic policy at the International Trade Fair but will now visit the affected areas instead.

The heavy rainfall, following a deadly wildfire, has turned villages into lakes and trapped numerous residents. Emergency crews, including the army and coastguard, are working tirelessly to reach storm-hit villages, with challenging conditions hindering their efforts. British travel company Jet2 has cancelled all flights and holidays to the Aegean island of Skiathos due to the extreme weather. This is not the first time Greece has faced such extreme flooding, with flash floods in 2017 resulting in the loss of lives and leaving many homeless.
