Government Overthrown: Soldiers Seize Control in Nigers Apparent Coup, Prompting Global Outcry

Soldiers in Niger claim to have overthrown the government in an apparent coup. Members of the Presidential Guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum and sealed off access to the president's residence and offices in the capital, Niamey.

Talks broke down and the soldiers refused to release Bazoum, leading to the suspension of all institutions in the country, the closure of borders, and the imposition of a curfew.

Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, surrounded by nine other uniformed soldiers, announced the end of President Bazoum's regime in a televised address. Regional and global leaders, including the president of neighbouring Benin and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), have called for Bazoum's release.

The country has a history of coup attempts and is struggling with poverty and jihadist insurgencies. The international community, including the EU, the United Nations, and the United States, has condemned the coup and called for the restoration of democracy. Negotiations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to mediate the situation.
