German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his confidence on Wednesday that the United States would continue to provide support for Ukraine, despite the ongoing political turmoil in Washington. Scholz made these remarks during a press conference in Berlin following a phone call between President Joe Biden and allied leaders on Tuesday. The phone call between President Biden and Western leaders aimed to alleviate concerns after new assistance for Ukraine was dropped from a deal in the US Congress to avoid a government shutdown. This decision was met with opposition from hardline Republicans.

However, President Biden's hopes of swiftly passing a new bill in support of Ukraine were further disrupted when the same hardliners ousted Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. During the phone call, President Biden reaffirmed the United States' commitment to supporting Ukraine in its defense of sovereignty and territorial integrity. The leaders of key allies such as Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, Romania, the heads of the EU and NATO, and the foreign minister of France echoed their commitments to Ukraine's cause. Chancellor Scholz, after his conversation with President Biden, expressed his belief that a significant number of representatives from both the Democratic and Republican parties support the aid for Ukraine.

He stated that he is convinced that the political process will successfully approve this aid, in addition to the previously approved assistance. According to the White House, President Biden's message during the call was that the United States can be counted on to support Ukraine not only presently but also in the future. Since the full-scale invasion by Russia in February 2022, Washington has already committed over $43 billion in military aid to Kyiv.

Congress has approved a total of $113 billion, including humanitarian assistance, to aid Ukraine. Germany ranks as the second-largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the United States. With the assurance from Chancellor Scholz and President Biden's commitment, it seems that Ukraine can continue to rely on international support as it faces the challenges to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
