Indian business tycoon Gautam Adani has pledged to complete a 500 MW solar and wind power project in Mannar and Pooneryn, Sri Lanka, by January 2025. This commitment was made during a meeting between Adani and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe in New Delhi.

The meeting also resulted in agreements on renewable energy cooperation and the development of the eastern city of Trincomalee as an energy hub. A permit was also issued for a joint venture between the Ceylon Electricity Board and NTPC for a solar park in the town of Sampur.

With an investment of nearly $1 billion, these projects demonstrate Adani Group's expanding presence in the regional port and energy sector. Adani's renewable energy project initially faced backlash, but Sri Lanka later amended its energy laws, expressing confidence in the future of the projects.

The completion of the 500 MW solar and wind power project will have a significant impact on Sri Lanka's transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. The collaboration between Sri Lanka and India signifies the growing cooperation between the two countries in addressing climate change and energy security challenges.
