Six people have been remanded in custody over the killing of a French teenager at a village dance party in Crepol, in the southeastern region of Drome, according to prosecutors. The 16-year-old victim, identified as Thomas, was stabbed when a group of outsiders attacked the festive crowd. He tragically died on his way to the hospital, while eight others were injured, three seriously. The suspects, three of whom are minors and the others aged between 19 and 22, were detained on Tuesday in connection with Thomas's murder. This incident has sparked political controversy, with far-right politicians quick to blame the attack on youths from immigrant backgrounds.

In response to the tragedy, over 6,000 people marched in the town of Romans-sur-Isere, where Thomas's high school is located, to honor his memory. However, tensions escalated when around 40 ultra-right activists gathered in the town center, leading to clashes with the police. Numerous injuries were reported, and 24 individuals were arrested over the weekend. Local public prosecutor Laurent de Caigny and Thierry Devimeux, the prefect of the Drome region, have both condemned the violence and called for calm and respect.

De Caigny emphasized that no one should take justice into their own hands, allowing investigators to work on the case's extreme seriousness. Devimeux also highlighted an incident where an activist was assaulted and had his vehicle burned. Following 96 hours in police custody, the suspects were transferred to the Valence courthouse on Saturday. The public prosecutor's office has requested an investigation into charges including attempted murder and murder in an organized gang. Nine people have been placed under investigation, with six, including two minors, being remanded in custody, and three, including one minor, being placed under judicial supervision. Over a hundred witnesses have been questioned, but the motive and details of the crime are yet to be established fully.

Reports indicate that the altercation began inside the dance hall and continued outside after a remark about one of the suspect's hairstyles. Additional young people arrived at the scene in one or two cars. Nine witnesses reported hearing remarks aimed at white people, though it cannot be definitively stated at this stage whether the victims were targeted based on their race, ethnicity, or religion, according to de Caigny.

The tragic killing has deeply affected the community, evident by the over 2,000 attendees at Thomas's funeral in the village of Saint-Donat-sur-l'Herbasse. However, it has also become a rallying point for far-right groups, who claim that the assault represents anti-white racism. Marion Marechal, the leading candidate for the far-right Reconquete party, has accused anti-white racism of spreading into the countryside. These claims have heightened tensions surrounding the incident.
