French Farmers Block Major Motorways in Protest Against Government Policies
French farmers are protesting the government's agricultural policies, causing major traffic disruptions around Paris. President Macron has called for a meeting to address the escalating crisis.
French farmers have staged a massive protest against the government, blocking major motorways around the outskirts of Paris with tractors in a standoff over concerns about falling incomes and competition from cheap imports. This protest is part of a growing wave of anger across Europe as farmers grapple with red tape, environmental policies, and dwindling profits. With farmers aiming to establish eight chokepoints on significant roads into Paris, they are making their voices heard in what they consider to be a battle for survival.

In response, the government has deployed 15,000 police and gendarmes to prevent the interference with strategic locations, as well as Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports, and the Rungis international wholesale food market. President Emmanuel Macron has called a meeting with several ministers on Monday afternoon to address the escalating crisis, while Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has attempted to offer concessions that have been rejected by protesting farmers.
The demonstrations have caused traffic disruptions on the eight motorways leading to Paris and have raised concerns about potential impacts on food deliveries to supermarkets. The farmers allege that their incomes have fallen due to EU and French bureaucracy and regulations, and are demanding fairer prices for produce and the continuation of subsidies on agricultural diesel. As the protests continue to intensify, the government is under pressure to find a resolution to the crisis.
