In a recent statement, Russia's former president Dmitry Medvedev warned that the ongoing war between Moscow and Kyiv could last for decades and that the West is destined to face defeat. Medvedev emphasized that Russia sees no alternative but to persist in the struggle, stating, "Should it take years or even decades, then so be it.
We have no choice: either we will destroy their hostile political regime, or the collective West will eventually tear Russia to pieces." He further asserted that such an outcome would be undesirable for all parties involved, as Russia believes that if it loses the battle, the West will also "perish."
Medvedev described Ukraine as a state with a "terrorist essence" and expressed Russia's determination to completely disassemble it and prevent Kyiv from rising again. He argued that the conflict is existential for Russia, claiming that Western support for Ukraine will eventually wane as their own interests are affected.
Medvedev suggested that for the West, the war is seen as strange and distant, and they will ultimately lose interest and withdraw support. He noted, "Someone else’s war sooner or later becomes boring, costly, and irrelevant." In a separate development, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky celebrated the decision to supply F-16 fighter jets to strengthen Ukraine's air force during his visit to the Netherlands.
Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte announced that the Netherlands and Denmark have committed to transferring F-16s to Ukraine once certain conditions are met. Zelensky regarded this decision as historic and a step towards bolstering Ukraine's air defenses.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing for years, with significant military and economic aid from the West provided to Ukraine. However, Moscow has consistently urged the West to halt their assistance, arguing that it only prolongs hostilities and causes more harm to the Ukrainian people without altering the outcome. Medvedev's warning serves as a stark reminder of the long-lasting impact and potential consequences of the ongoing war.
