Former President Trump Dodges Questions on Capitol Riot and Criminal Charges in Fiery Interview
Former President Donald Trump refused to answer questions about his involvement in the Capitol riot during an interview on NBC's Meet the Press. Trump defended his actions, facing charges related to overturning the election and discussed his views on Russia, abortion, and more.
In a recent interview aired on NBC's "Meet the Press," former President Donald Trump refused to answer questions about whether he watched the Capitol riot unfold on television. Trump stated that he would "tell people later at an appropriate time." When pressed about his actions on January 6, 2021, he remained tight-lipped about whether he made phone calls as his supporters stormed the seat of American democracy. It has been reported that Trump's former aides have stated that he sequestered himself in a room off the Oval Office to watch the events of that day, even rewinding and rewatching certain parts.
However, when asked about who he called during the insurrection, Trump responded, "Why would I tell you that?" During the interview, Trump defended his actions on the day of the attack, stating that he had made "beautiful statements" but did not address his public silence during the violence. Trump's supporters, fueled by his baseless claims about the 2020 presidential election, stormed the Capitol as Congress prepared to certify Joe Biden's victory. While Trump is facing federal criminal charges for his efforts to overturn the election results, he is not facing charges specifically related to the insurrection. When asked about pardoning the rioters charged for their actions, Trump stated that he would consider it if he feels it is appropriate.
Trump is currently facing 91 criminal charges across federal and state courts, including charges related to his attempts to overturn the election results, mishandling classified documents, and allegations of hush-money payments to cover up extramarital affairs. When asked if he fears going to jail, Trump responded, "No, I don't really. I don't even think about it. I'm built a little differently, I guess." During the interview, Trump also discussed his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his comments about negotiating an end to Russia's war in Ukraine. He expressed pleasure in Putin's praise and defended his own stance on the issue, claiming that a deal could have been negotiated which would have resulted in Russia having less territory than it currently holds.
Trump also touched on the topic of abortion, declining to say whether he would support a federal ban and criticizing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for signing a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. Trump stated that he believes abortion should be handled at the state level but expressed that the number of weeks in a pregnancy is the more crucial factor. This interview marked Trump's first broadcast network appearance since leaving office and was Kristen Welker's debut show as host. It showcased Trump's refusal to answer certain questions, his defense of his actions surrounding the Capitol riot, and his views on a range of topics.
