Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Faces Another Blow as Courts Reject Bail Petitions, While Wife's Interim Bail Extended
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan faces a setback as local courts reject nine bail petitions in connection with violent protests. Khan is already serving a jail sentence in a corruption case.
In a setback for former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, local courts in Islamabad have rejected nine bail petitions filed by him. The petitions were in connection with the First Information Reports (FIRs) registered against him over violent protests that took place on May 9.
Khan is currently serving a jail sentence in the Attock jail after being convicted in the Toshakhana corruption case. The cases against Khan were registered in various police stations, including Khanna, Barakahu, Karachi Company, Ramna, Kohsar, Tarnool, and Secretariat.
The court stated that Khan's bail cannot be extended according to the supreme court verdict. However, the interim bail of Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, in a case related to the bogus receipt of Toshakhana gifts has been extended till September 7. Khan's arrest in the corruption case triggered violent protests across the country, with party supporters attacking defense and military installations.
I'mHundreds of PTI workers and leaders were arrested for their alleged involvement in the riots, while Khan was accused of being the mastermind behind the protests. The former Prime Minister was sentenced to three years in prison and imposed an Rs100,000 fine in the Toshakhana case. Following his conviction, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified him from holding public office for five years.
