Finnish Border Battles: Barriers and Accusations Rise as Migrant Influx from Russia Surges

Finnish authorities have started erecting barriers, including concrete obstacles topped with barbed-wire, along the country's border with Russia in an effort to better control the influx of migrants. Finland has decided to close three more crossing points, leaving only one Arctic point open for migrants seeking asylum. In November, over 600 migrants, mainly from the Middle East and Africa, arrived in Finland without proper visas and documentation. This is a significant increase compared to previous months.

The Finnish government suspects foul play by Russian border officials and believes Russia is deliberately encouraging the movement of migrants to punish Finland for joining NATO. The Kremlin has denied these allegations and expressed regret over Finland's decision to close the checkpoints. Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen stated that Russia is instrumentalizing migrants as part of its "hybrid warfare" against Finland.

The Finnish government is considering further border closures if the flow of asylum seekers continues, including the possibility of closing the entire border. The government has also asked for additional support from the EU's border and coast guard agency Frontex to manage the situation.
