The trending hashtag #FairyFlying on TikTok has raised concerns among health experts in the US, who believe that it promotes suicidal tendencies. The trend involves users posting videos of themselves appearing to hang in the air, mimicking a flying fairy.

However, these videos are shot in a way that gives the illusion of hanging in the air, when in reality, users are standing on furniture with their crocs hanging onto a wardrobe. This unsettling trend has garnered a whopping 66 million views so far. Dr. Josh Stein, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, expressed concern about the potential negative effects of the trend.

He stated that such videos could trigger negative emotions in individuals who have experienced suicidal ideation or have loved ones who have attempted or committed suicide. Alicia D. Akins, a mental health counselor specializing in treating teens, also expressed concern about the trend, noting that individuals with mental health issues may be influenced by these videos.

TikTok, in response to the concerns, has stated that they strictly prohibit and remove content that promotes dangerous behavior. They have previously removed harmful content from their platform and provide safety messages when users search for prohibited terms.

However, it is important to note that despite the platform's efforts, these trends can still have a significant impact on vulnerable individuals. It is crucial for social media platforms like TikTok to be aware of and address potentially harmful trends, as they have a responsibility to prioritize the safety and well-being of their users.

The blurred lines between reality and make-believe on social media can have serious consequences, as individuals may attempt dangerous stunts or self-harming behaviors to imitate viral trends. Education and awareness about the potential consequences of these trends are essential in protecting vulnerable individuals.
