Evacuations from Gaza Strip to Egypt Suspended Amid Mounting Challenges: Bombings Targeting Medical Convoy Forces Pause in Desperate Efforts to Save Lives
Evacuations from Gaza into Egypt have been temporarily suspended due to difficulties in bringing medical evacuees across the border. The ongoing war and bombings have further complicated the situation. Urgent action is needed to alleviate the worsening conditions for Palestinians.
Evacuations from the Gaza Strip into Egypt have been temporarily suspended, according to three Egyptian security sources and a Palestinian official. The suspension was due to difficulties in bringing medical evacuees to the Rafah border crossing from inside Gaza. Limited evacuations had been taking place since November 1, but had to be paused twice in the past week due to bombings targeting medical convoys.
A small number of foreign passport holders and medical evacuees had managed to enter Egypt before the suspension went into effect. On other days, several hundred foreign passport holders, dual nationals, and dependents had been crossing. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, which has entered its second month. Evacuations from Gaza are urgently needed to alleviate the worsening conditions for the 2.3 million Palestinians living there.
The war has taken a devastating toll, with over 10,500 Palestinians and over 1,400 Israelis killed so far. The situation remains unstable, and efforts are being made to negotiate a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas.
