EU Urges US Lawmakers to Reconsider Omission of Aid to Ukraine, Raising Concerns of Russian Aggression
EU urges US to reconsider exclusion of financial support for Ukraine in stop-gap budget bill. European officials pledge continued support while Ukrainian officials seek new measures to ensure US backing. British defense secretary expresses support, but no immediate deployment of soldiers. Russian politicians criticize proposal.
The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has called on US lawmakers to reconsider their decision to exclude financial support for Ukraine from a stop-gap budget bill. The legislation, approved on Saturday to keep the US federal government running until November 17, dropped provisions for additional aid to Ukraine. European officials were surprised by the move and pledged their continued support for Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials reassured that US backing for Ukraine would continue despite concerns over the omission of additional aid. The omission has raised concerns in Kyiv, which heavily relies on Western financial aid and military equipment in its fight against Russia. Ukrainian parliament member Oleksiy Goncharenko suggested adopting new measures to ensure continued support from the US.
Meanwhile, Britain's defense secretary, Grant Shapps, expressed support for Ukraine and suggested that British military training could be moved into western Ukraine. However, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that there would be no immediate deployment of British soldiers to Ukraine. Russian politicians criticized the proposal, with former President Dmitry Medvedev claiming that it would lead to a Third World War.
