In a promising development for Ukraine, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has expressed the need for increased military aid to the country during his visit to Kyiv on Sunday. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Borrell emphasized that Ukraine requires enhanced capabilities and faster assistance. He reiterated the EU's commitment to providing ongoing support to the nation.

In a statement shared on the platform formerly known as Twitter, Borrell highlighted the continuous EU military assistance he discussed with Defence Minister Rustem Umerov during their first in-person meeting. Stressing the significance of long-term security commitments, Borrell assured the Ukrainian government of their steadfast dedication to the nation's defense. Expressing gratitude for the EU's unwavering support, Umerov, whose appointment was recently approved by parliament, acknowledged the meeting as a starting point for fruitful cooperation. The discussions between Borrell and Umerov covered various aspects of military aid, including artillery, ammunition, air defense, electronic warfare (EW), and long-term assistance programs.

Moreover, they delved into the possibility of localizing the defense industry in Ukraine, facilitating its growth and self-reliance in this critical sector. Furthermore, addressing the pressing need for artillery shells, the European Defence Agency disclosed that seven EU countries had ordered ammunition through a procurement scheme. This initiative aims to urgently supply necessary artillery shells to Ukraine while replenishing depleted stocks in Western nations. With Borrell's visit solidifying the EU's commitment to Ukraine's security, it is hoped that the increased military aid and long-term assistance programs will bolster the nation's defense capabilities and contribute to its overall stability.
