Dutch anti-EU far-right populist Geert Wilders is set for a major victory in parliamentary elections, according to an exit poll. The poll shows Wilders' Freedom Party (PVV) winning 35 out of 150 seats, beating all predictions and putting the party 10 seats ahead of its closest rival. Wilders' victory is attributed to his anti-immigration stance, which resonated with voters concerned about housing shortages, the cost of living, and the healthcare system.

Wilders' victory follows the return to power of the equally anti-EU populist Robert Fico in Slovakia and the formation of Italy's most right-wing government since World War Two. Wilders' inflammatory views on Islam have prompted death threats, and abroad, his comments about the prophet Mohammed have led to violent protests in Muslim-majority countries. Despite his anti-EU stance, forming a government with like-minded parties may prove difficult as none of them share his ideas. The conservative VVD, the party of outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte, is in third place in the exit poll.

Talks to form a government could be challenging as both the VVD and the upstart party 'New Social Contract' have voiced concerns about working with Wilders due to his anti-Islam stance. However, Wilders remains confident that an agreement can be reached. Rutte will continue in a caretaker role until a new government is installed, likely in the first half of 2024.
