Denmark witnessed a historic moment on Sunday as Queen Margrethe II signed her abdication, making way for her eldest son, King Frederik X, to assume the throne and become the new monarch. This voluntary abdication marks the first time a Danish monarch has relinquished the throne in nearly 900 years, as Denmark's monarchy traces its origins back to the 10th-century Viking king Gorm the Old. The formal signing of the abdication at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen was a jubilant occasion, with massive crowds turning out to witness the historic royal succession.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed Frederik as king from the balcony of the palace, with the new monarch standing beside her, wearing a ceremonial military uniform adorned with medals. "My hope is to become a unifying king of tomorrow," Frederik said. "It is a task I have approached all my life." The abdication leaves Denmark with two queens: Margrethe retains her title, while Frederik’s wife, Mary, becomes Queen Mary. Their eldest son, 18-year-old Prince Christian, assumes the role of crown prince and heir to the throne.

The abdication came as a surprise to many, as Margrethe cited health issues as the reason for her decision to step down on New Year's Eve. However, a survey commissioned by Denmark’s public broadcaster DR showed that the majority of respondents believed that Frederik and Mary were prepared to take on their new roles. Despite the long-standing history of the Danish monarchy, the royal family remains popular among the Danish people, with thousands gathering outside the palace to witness the historic event.

The abdication was followed by celebrations in Copenhagen, with the royal guards' music band parading through the city in red jackets to mark the occasion. The momentous event was not only celebrated within Denmark but also drew congratulations from royals across Europe, with U.K. King Charles III expressing his commitment to working with the new king and queen to ensure strong bonds between their countries. The historic succession was a joyous occasion for the nation, as Denmark welcomed a new era under King Frederik X and Queen Mary.
