The incident has sparked a debate about the freedom of expression in Pakistan. Media watchdogs and journalists have come together to demand an explanation from the government about the incident. The ARY News report stated that some journalists have termed the incident a “black day” in the history of Pakistani media.
On June 30, Pakistani journalist Azam Chaudhry asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and two ministers - Ishaq Dar and Marriyum Aurangzeb - about the restrictions on the freedom of expression during a press conference at Punjab governor’s House. The journalist was reportedly fired from his job at state-owned PTV hours after raising the questions. Azam Chaudhry told the PM and ministers that despite the ruling coalition parties, including PML(N) and PPP, supporting freedom of expression, the media in Pakistan was unable to function independently due to the restrictions imposed on it. He asked the prime minister when and how these restrictions would end. In response, Shehbaz Sharif asked the journalist to voice his concerns with the information minister.
Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb refuted the claims of the journalist's dismissal, saying that he was never hired by PTV as a permanent or contract employee. She further stated that if the Shehbaz Sharif government had any problem with the journalist's views, he would not have been invited to the press conference. The incident has sparked a debate about the freedom of expression in the country. Media watchdogs and journalists have come together to demand an explanation from the government about the incident.
Some have termed it a “black day” in the history of Pakistani media. The debate over the freedom of expression in Pakistan is likely to continue until the government provides a satisfactory response to the journalist community regarding the incident. In order to ensure a safe and secure press environment, the media needs to be given the freedom to function independently and without any restrictions. Only then will the citizens of Pakistan have access to reliable and unbiased news.
