The death toll from severe flooding in central Greece has risen to 10 people, with another four still missing, according to the country's civil protection minister. Rescue crews have been working tirelessly to evacuate hundreds of people from inundated villages using helicopters and boats.

The heavy rainstorms also affected neighboring Bulgaria and Turkey, resulting in a total death toll of 22 across all three countries. The rainstorms transformed streams into raging torrents, causing dams to burst, roads and bridges to be washed away, and cars to be thrown into the sea.

Some areas received double the average annual rainfall for Athens in just 12 hours. Despite the rainstorms subsiding, floodwater continued to rise after the Pineios River overflowed near the city of Larissa, prompting evacuation orders for several areas. The situation remains critical, with authorities on constant alert. Over 1,700 people have been rescued so far, with more expected as the operation continues.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has requested financial assistance from the European Union for rebuilding efforts. The flooding has caused extensive damage, with fears that the overall cost could exceed €1 billion. The Greek government's first priority is the evacuation of citizens in danger, particularly those in isolated villages that have been cut off by floodwaters.

Numerous houses have been destroyed and many residents remain without electricity or drinking water. The flooding comes after devastating wildfires that took a heavy toll on the country, further compounding Greece's struggles.
